2014 Events

The Scottish Coastal Rowing Association (SCRA) calender for 2014 will include a long distance event up the River Clyde into Glasgow city centre, as part of a bigger flotilla event on 26 July. The SCRA also hopes to host a regatta in Glasgow city centre. There is also the possibility of a touring event on the Great Glen, and a long distance race on the Forth to be organised by some of the SCRA clubs, as well as regattas virtually every weekend.

There will not be a St Ayles World Championships in 2014.

Seil Coastal Rowing plans to keep Selkie on the water for as long as possible over the winter, with some time out for essential maintenance – the last coat of paint was abandoned in the rush to launch before our regatta in June! So we can keep on practicing and keeping fit for all the events coming up.

An AGM will be held in October – watch this space.

The Boys

Beavers 023

The Boys’ team is currently going out on a Thursday evening. Alan, Liam, John and Ben, with Michelle as ‘chaperone’ and Sue as cox/coach.

A lovely sunny evening, with some excitement shooting Clachan Bridge, then seals in front of the skiff as we raced James in the Donut down the Sound back to Nick’s pontoon.

Craft Fair

Easdale 003

Selkie made a guest appearance at the Seil Craft Fair on Sunday 1 September.

We didn’t manage to recruit any more rowers for ourselves, but succeeded on behalf of Kilmelford and Oban! However, many folk were pleased to be able to see the skiff for the first time.

The photo was taken from the top of Dun Mor.

We’ve got a Trolley

trolleydollyOnce again we’ve picked the brains of the Ullapool people and copied their ideas for a trolley, which is 90% there, just needing some paint, some scrap carpet glued to the supporting pads and the axles drilled to take big washers and pins to stop the wheels falling off.

Image completed by Sue, fighting fit from the worlds in her new St Ayles skiff teeshirt. Which reminds us, serious work now needed to organise teeshirts, hoodies, car stickers and our flag.

Wow, what a week!

It’s been an amazing week here in Ullapool. I’ve rowed for Seil today. in the over 60s mixed – we came 6th in a field of 11 boats, putting us up to 25th on the leaderboard.

I’ve also rowed for Stornoway (old friends) and for the glamourous Portsoy Skiffettes in their pink boat, coxed Selkie, ceilidhed ashore and afloat and met some amazing people, all in sunshine amongst amazing scenery.

More later plus pix when I manage to get the laptop connected. Right now it’ s time for the medal presentations and the final ceilidh.

More about the Skiffieworlds

Further to Nick’s post earlier the few among us who have not been constantly out on the Sound practising racing starts and turns will have noticed that the heats and lanes were selected by secret ballot at Portsoy last weekend.

Nothing focuses the mind better than to see the name of one’s club listed alongside some of the toughest crews in the game (no names).

In accordance with our egalitarian principles all the five races which we have entered are mixed ones and those who have not yet indicated a preference for a particular category should note that the ages specified are minimums. Thus:

Those of us with bus passes can row in any of the races for which we have entered.

Those under 60 but over 50 can row on Wednesday at 14.00 (50+), Thursday at 11.30 (Open A) or 13.00 (Open B) or Friday at 12.30 (40+).

Those under 50 but over 40 can row on Thursday at 11.30 (Open A) or 13.00 (Open B) or Friday at 12.30 (40+).

Those lucky enough to be under 40 can only row on Thursday at 11.30 (Open A) or 13.00 (Open B).

No person can row in both Open A and Open B.

Here are the results of the draws in respect of our races:
