A Royal Salute

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh (Edward & Sophie) crossed over Clachan Bridge aka ‘The Bridge over the Atlantic’ en route to the T’nT, Easdale and Luing on Thursday 22 May.

Amazingly, we managed to get a crew together on a weekday morning, and rowed up under the bridge, rendezvousing perfectly with the Royal Party above us on the bridge as we returned with the tide. They took photos of us as we ‘tossed oars’ in salute. An outing with a difference and we were so lucky with the weather!

A Christmas Bonus

The Isle of Seil Coastal Rowing Club has received a Magic Little Grant through the partnership between Localgiving and Postcode Community Trust.

We received £500 towards our general running costs, including insurance and boatyard ‘fees’. As with most clubs and voluntary groups, our fundraising stalled during the pandemic and insurance costs for the skiff have more than doubled. This funding is a very welcome boost to our coffers.

Postcode Community Trust is a grant-giving charity funded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Localgiving is the UK’s leading membership and support network for local charities and community groups.

Magic Little Trolley!

The Isle of Seil Coastal Rowing Club has received a Magic Little Grant through the partnership between Localgiving and Postcode Community Trust.

We received £500 towards our new launching trolley. Our current trolley is eight years old, home-made made from offcuts – it has served us well, but bits are gradually falling off! Our rowers are not getting any younger, and the distance from the skiff berth in the boatyard to the sea is awfy long, especially at low water. Energy expended in launching and recovery may be greater than than the effort used to row! A new trolley is being made in Ayrshire, and will be ready in a fortnight, but as it is protection level 4, we can’t collect it just yet.

AGM 2020

Its a great shame that we won’t all be able to come together off the water for our AGM this year. I propose to conduct any business by email this year, as the active members of the club are already meeting in the skiff. The accounts are now ready, thank you Mary! And to Jean, for inspecting them once again.

I hope that you are all well and safe and look forward to seeing you out on the water, if covid and the weather allow. At the time of writing, we are in level 2 and so are permitted to row in a ‘field of play bubble’ as an outdoor contact sport. This may well change, so keep an eye on Facebook posts, and Spond.

I have attached my convenor’s report, and the accounts. The main expense this year has been the new launching trailer, still stuck in protection level 4.

Email alerts!

Make sure that you are automatically informed of upcoming planned outings by email. Click the wee envelope, as shown in the screenshot, to subscribe to all forums/a.

If it STILL isn’t working for you, then check your spam emails!

I am sorry, but I can’t contact everyone individually – committing to a particular row is up to you! Skiffing is a group activity and can’t proceed without a full crew. So if you put your name down, and don’t show, that lets everyone else down.

SCRA Club Development Weekend

Three delegates from Seil (Ewan, James & Louise) are attending SCRA’s Club Development Weekend over Easter, in Anstruther. Sue is also attending as an SCRA committee member/organiser.
Workshops include warming-up for rowing, fixed seat technique, racing coxing, lifejacket maintenance, Man Overboard drill (with the RNLI), adaptive rowing, safeguarding, fundraising etc etc – and networking with around 140 other skiffies! There is also the chance to see around the Fisheries Museum, the home of the St Ayles skiff.
The plan is for the lucky three to trickle down their new knowledge to the rest of the club.

The 5th AGM of the club will be held on Friday 8th December at 1930 in Seil island Hall (small hall).
