Circumnavigation of Seil, and Ceilidh, 11 June

This year’s regatta is a circumnavigation of the Isle of Seil, anti-clockwise, on Saturday 11 June, starting from Balvicar at 0900, Hunters Quay at 0930. Crews which have confirmed so far are Selkie, Isle of Mull, Pittenweem and the Isle of Luing. We hope to shoot the bridge around 1000.

A ceildh will be held in the Seil Island Hall in the evening. A buffet will start at 1900, and the ceilidh at 2000. Live music will be performed by Seil Sound and by The Brother. There will be a raffle and a pay bar. For details see the regatta tab above; tickets are now available from Balvicar Stores.

Fundraising such as this helps keep our membership costs down. This year, we would like to make a new set of longer oars and have more comfy seats to help alleviate ‘rowbot’ as well as undertaking general maintenance on the hull and cover.

See you on the water, and/or at the Ceilidh! All welcome.

Cox Training

The Argyll Cox Training weekend was held on Easdale Island and the Isle of Seil, and attended by enthusiastic wannabe coxes from the Isle of Mull, Mid-Argyll, the Isle of Luing and the Isle of Seil (David, Helen and Sue T.)

Many thanks go to Ali (Portobello) and Andrew (St Andrews) from the SCRA committee for running the course; Nick Hunter for allowing us to use his shore for launching visiting skiffs; Louise, Helen/David and Sue/James for providing beds and Sue (Argyll rep, SCRA) for the soup etc.

Freshwater regatta, Loch Katrine

Ten rowers, and two coxes, from Ullapool, Islay and Isle of Seil represented the North West Region (Argyll Superstate) at the Freshwater Sprint Regatta at Loch Katrine on 24 October. Over 200 rowers took part in wind, rain and sunshine. Most people had two or three races out of the 18 on offer, including two long distance ones. Medals were won, cough cough. Thanks to Ullapool for letting us using their skiff (nice oars!).
A special mention to our beach master, Ken, from Tighnabruich who kept us all in order. And of course, to the umpire launches, powered by steam – very atmospheric!

Marine Scotland Coastal & Marine Recreation Survey

MARINE SCOTLAND SURVEY – please fill it in and make sure that coastal rowing is put/kept on the Scottish Government’s radar!!! I have done one on behalf of the club, but individual responses are needed too. Prizes to be won …

Marine Scotland’s first national survey of coastal &
marine recreation. Take our survey: http://www.marinerecreationandtourism.scot/survey/

Marine Scotland is launching its first national survey of tourism and recreation around the Scottish coast and seas. It covers a vast array of activities and tourism businesses in, on or next to the sea.

By telling us who does what and where, the survey will help
ensure future plans reflect Scotland’s unique opportunities for
activities such as kayaking, sailing, wildlife watching or simply
playing about with a frisbee on the beach. It will help recreation be
appropriately recognised in the planning process, providing the kind of
information needed to be considered alongside other activities like
shipping, off-shore renewables and fish farming. It will also help
justify and guide future investment in facilities and infrastructure.

Everyone who completes the survey will have the opportunity to enter a free prize draw with prizes that include:

* a short break in one of Scottish Canals’ holiday cottages
* Spa Day Experience for two guests at Portavadie’s new Spa
* Family tickets for Inveraray Jail and Inveraray Castle
* Two Return Tickets for the Kintyre Express fast passenger ferry
from Campbeltown to Ballycastle in Northern Ireland

The survey is online until 31st October 2015.

You can complete the survey as an individual or on behalf of a club,
association or other organisation.

Please forward it to your friends, members or anyone else you think might be interested.

There is a separate survey for businesses involved in marine recreation and tourism. If you are interested in completing this survey, please click: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/marine_business_survey
